Chamomile

Chamomile is a wonderful, topical anti-inflammatory that has fantastic results in combating eczema, and can also serve to sooth reddened, irritated facial tissue. Green tea is a potent antioxidant that can help reduce free radicals, slow the effects of aging, and repair sun-damaged skin. Rose petals are soothing, astringent, and regenerative, which makes them a great choice for aging skin. Comfrey root and calendula blossom are healing herbs which can help heal rashes, chemical-induced contact dermatitis or other topical conditions. Lavender buds seem to have some effectiveness against the ruddy complexion issues associated with rosacea, as it is both tonifying and gently calming to facial tissue. Orange blossom, if you are lucky enough to have access to this delicate flower, is deeply hydrating and makes a great addition to facial creams for younger-looking skin. Mints, including peppermint, spearmint, and lemon balm, can have a wonderfully stimulating effect when infused into a cream, and not only add refreshment to the skin, but add life to a dull complexion. Sweet violet flower and leaf are soothing and mildy astringent. They contain salicylic acid and are high in vitamins A and C, so are wonderful taken internally or used externally for added nutrition to the skin. The soothing nature of this herb’s emolliency is great for any skin type, even sensitive, easily irritated skin. All of the above herbs can be used fresh or dried, but be sure to use organic or sustainably wild-crafted herbs so that you are not introducing new chemicals into your cream.
