C.F. Martin & Co. is one of the oldest companies in the United States, and has been making guitars in Nazareth, PA since 1836. Many pilgrims come to take the factory tour, and see the process of crafting guitars that have been chosen by musicians such as Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Beck, and Nancy Wilson. One of my favorite musicians, Johnny Cash, played Martin guitars, among other famous Martin owners. Martin combines handcrafting with the addition of robot polishers. Their latest venture are guitars made from recycled wood from dismantled Canadian bridges. When I first moved to PA, I thought of Martin guitars a local industry, not realizing their nationwide appeal.
The inlaid mother of pearl is breathtaking, and a work of art in itself, in addition to the fine craft of making an instrument for its sound.
