I’m hopping back on the Challenge train with this post, writing about something on an international level and how it relates back to Pennsylvania…with my own twist :)
When my Nana passed away in 2008, I acquired 2 Waterford Crystal vanity jars. I suspect that they were intended for body powder, cotton balls, or perfume. I’m not sure what purpose Nana gave them and I don’t remember ever seeing them out in her house, but I am so thrilled to have them in mine.
I had the vessels wrapped up and packed away for a few years, but then all of a sudden, I was inspired to use them. The days of keeping “good” things packed away are mostly over for me. I try very hard to use beautiful things as often as I can. Each day should be treated as if it is special enough to be honored with crystal, right?
I don’t know anything about the age of these pieces and don’t think they immigrated with my great-great-grandparents, but it’s still nice to have them as part of our family history. They belonged to a lovely lady that my daughter never got to meet, but of whom I have years and years of the fondest memories. A trip to Ireland is in my future at some point. I’m certain there are fewer things more spiritual and humbling than returning to one’s ancestral homeland. I will look forward to that trip.
Most of the time when I use these jars in my decorating, I fill them with filtered water and add a couple of drops of whatever food coloring suits the season or holiday. I just got them ready for St. Patrick’s Day yesterday with a little green, some scraps of fabric & informative labels. If anyone wants my recipe for leprechaun-catching potion, please let me know. I’ll be glad to share!
